Cheshire is unique. It is the only county in England that has a Best Kept Station Competition. Each year Railway Stations throughout Cheshire compete for the coveted awards in this Competition. Handforth was Cheshire’s Best Kept Station 2009 with awards also going to Chelford, Chester, Cuddington, Crewe, Frodsham, Greenbank, Helsby, Knutsford, Nantwich, and Runcorn Railway Stations. A special award was also given to Allostock Junction at Hill’s Garden Centre, between Holmes Chapel and Knutsford, to celebrate Cheshire’s Garden Railways. Since its inception in 2003, Cheshire Best Kept Stations have had many wins but the real winner has been the partnership built between the rail operating companies, local authorities and the local volunteer groups - those unsung heroes in the community. Cheshire’s Best Kept Stations is sponsored by Cheshire West and Chester Council, Cheshire East Council, Visit Chester and Cheshire, Northern Rail, Virgin Trains and Roberts Bakery. Cheshire Crimebeat – the High Sheriff of Cheshire’s Charity – supports youth projects at our stations, allowing young people to make a positive contribution in the community. Cheshire Best Kept Stations – where everyone is a winner. A partnership that encourages cleaner, tidier and more hospitable stations in Cheshire |
