Cheshire Best Kept Stations Adlington Railway Station Adlington Hall Adlington Gardens

ADLINGTON HALL has been the home of the Legh family since 1315. Parts of the current hall date back to 1505.  Handel composed a hunting song when he stayed here – after a visit to a local blacksmith he cam back inspired and composed “The Harmonious Blacksmith”. The gardens of Adlington Hall contain a little cottage which was the residence of the local hermit. He was employed by the great house to ‘make the countryside more interesting’.

The Hall is open to the public in July and is open for guided tours at other times.  It also offers excellent facilities for weddings, corporate entertaining, conferencing or activity days within the historic house.  Activities such as clay pigeon shooting, quad biking and even off roading in their own quarry are also offered.

Coal mining took place in the area from the middle of the 18th century completion of the MACCLESFIELD CANAL in 1831 enabled coal to be transported more easily.  Today it is thought by many to be the most beautiful of England's inland waterways. It links the Peak Forest canal at Marple and the Trent & Mersey near Kidsgrove.  There is a spectacular series of 12 locks at Bosley before crossing the Dane via Telford’s superb iron aquaduct.
