A lane leads down to Ince Marshes. After completion of the MANCHESTER SHIP CANAL in 1894, the village was cut off from the shore, making life a trifle difficult for local fishermen. North of the canal, the marshes are a haunt of wild fowl and wild flowers.
Elton has grown rapidly with the arrival of the nearby Shell complex. The area developed as Britain’s oil refinery as tankers became too big to use the Ship Canal. The STANLOW REFINERY is the seventh largest oil refinery in Europe and produces one-sixth of the UK's petrol. |
