Port Sunlight was the creation, from 1888 of Lord Leverhulme who started his working life slicing carbolic soap in Bolton, then made his fortune selling soap ready shaped, wrapped and nicely scented called ‘Sunlight’.

Famous architects built homes where no two groups of houses were the same amongst open gardens and allotments. Port Sunlight is now a designated Conservation Area, still within its original boundaries. The village is now managed by The Port Sunlight Village Trust and although houses can be bought on the open market, the Trust remains responsible for the environment and landscape in Port Sunlight.

The LADY LEVER GALLERY was built in 1914 and is in one of the wonders of the North and has been described as Merseyside’s Taj Mahal. It contains one of the world’s great collections of beautiful things.

Discover within SUNLIGHT VISION MUSEUM what it would have been like to live in the village during the late 1800s and early 1900s. Watch ‘Sunlight Spirit’, a twenty minute film set in 1914 before the declaration of the First World War. Explore the object gallery and see real village memorabilia. There are also a number of hands-on interactives for you to enjoy such as design your own house or soap package.

The GLADSTONE THEATRE presents both amateur and professional shows and has two resident societies (Port Sunlight Players and Bebington Dramatic Society) who perform comedy, drama, musicals and pantomimes. The theatre is used by local operatic societies, musical groups, youth organisations and dancing schools. Each spring there is a well established drama festival.
